  1. The earth says hello!

March 21, 2010 by Amy Hansford

It feels a little bit like Spring is actually here today. It’s odd – there’s a smell in the air of things growing.

To celebrate this, some teeny tiny daffodils have sprouted up in the window box outside the kitchen. They have a certain ‘Alice in Wonderland angst’ about them. I expect them to sniff me as I go past in the morning…

  2. Ug!

February 14, 2010 by Amy Hansford

Having had the pleasure of being Sam and Ilona’s guest this week, I found myself sitting in their glorious old armchair by their equally glorious and oft used fireplace. Upon returning back home, I stared at our never-used* fireplace and wondered how difficult it would really be to get a decent fire going.

Alex is in a manliness phase at the moment – chopping things, home improvements etc, and so was happy to take on the task of fire-creator. And so, he made fire! With the logs remaining in there, the coal from the garage and a helpful hand from a Cracklelog he had it going a roaring treat. As I used to live in a house with no central heating, reliant on the living room fireplace for warmth, I know that a decent fire takes a lot of tending to. Alex happily took to this challenge, poking and feeding it as required.

We’re now allowing the coals to give us what’s left of their heat, but the room certainly feels a little more toasty for it.

  3. Snow Day

February 2, 2009 by Amy Hansford

It’s been lovely seeing everyone’s comments and emails on the snow. For those reading this in retrospect, it’s Monday morning and most of Britain has woken up to 5 inches of snow, a rarity.

I’m planning on posting some of my favourite comments here for posterity and also to allow you to share too, even if you’re not getting your ‘Snow Day’.

“Cats sleeping apart from Otter, who is calling me to look at the disaster that has happened in the back garden. I tell him it’s ok, and he cries “no it’s not ok, it’s all out the front too, loooooooooook”, and we have to go look at the front. If I dont look he howls.”

“I have one unhappy cat taking a crap in the house. Ack!”
    ~ A friend on her cat’s reaction ~

“I feel like writing on a big piece of paper, ‘how many survivors?’ and showing it to the office across the street.”

“Watching the TfL home page is a bit like a view into some sort of civic apocalypse”

  4. A little bit of good

September 11, 2008 by Amy Hansford

We all know we’ve had a bit of an up and down summer. Blisteringly hot beautiful days were equalled by monstrous monsoons and putting the heating on in August. All in all, a Brit’s perfect summer -?it gave us something to whige about. But there is a time in life before we get all distraught at such irritating things as nature. A time where things are still good, almost any way you look at them. And that is when you’re a kid.

Standing at the bus stop today I overheard a 7? year old talking with her mum. Do remember -?it was overcast but quite warm.
Kid: “Cor, we just had summer, and now it’s here again!”
Mum: “Well, we didn’t really have a summer.”
Kid: “Yeah, we had a summer….?”

Sometimes it takes a little person to remind us big people of the big things we perceive as little.
